Joe's Surgery Day

Today was the big day we've been waiting for...Joe's surgery to repair the hernia.

After the RSV they wanted to wait a month to give his lungs a chance to clear up
before putting him under anesthesia, so this day has been hanging over our heads for
awhile now.  I knew it was a pretty simple procedure, but it's never easy knowing your baby
is going in for surgery.  The surgeon told us about the risks and no matter how minute they
were I couldn't help but let my mind wander to the worst case scenarios.  Needless to say,
I was very thankful that the day was finally here and we could put this all behind us.

Not to mention, I had to do my best to keep him healthy for the past month so he didn't
catch anything else that might postpone the surgery even longer.  It is nearly impossible
to keep a 15 month old healthy in the winter.  It is even harder to keep a 15 month old
thumb sucker healthy.  Everywhere he goes he touches something and then his thumb goes
right in his mouth.  Aside from grocery shopping, errands, and healthy play dates (which are
few and far between) we've pretty much been stuck at home the past month.
I have definitely been counting down the days until we can resume our normal activities.

The surgery was scheduled at 11:15AM so we needed to be there at 9:45AM.  We dropped
Owen off to spend the day with Grandpa Joe and headed to Lurie Children's Hospital.
We got Joe checked in and they showed us back to his room.  We changed him into his
gown and waited for our visits from the anesthesiologist and surgeon to fill us in on
everything we needed to know about what they'd be doing once they took him back.

I have to say that Lurie does such a great job of making us feel comfortable.  Not only did
they have Aladdin on their in-house movie network which made Ryan happy, but there was
a volunteer that popped in probably 4 or 5 times dropping off different toys she thought Joe
would like to play with.  Joe seemed to thoroughly appreciate all of her efforts.

After talking with the anesthesiologist, we knew Joe might have a hard time leaving us when
they had to take him to surgery so they offered to give him a mild sedative to relax him while
he was still in his room.  We happily took them up on their offer figuring it would be best to
have him as calm as possible.  It definitely did the trick because when they came to wheel
him out he was talking up a storm, singing to himself and didn't seem to notice or care that
they were wheeling him away from us.  They also offered to give him a caudal block during
surgery, which is what I would equate to an epidural during childbirth.  They offer it to kids
with any surgeries below the belt.  It basically numbs that area for a few hours.  Not only
does it help with the pain, but the baby gets less anesthesia over all.  The risks are very
small and we wanted Joe to be as comfortable and pain free as possible,
so we gave the ok.

Then Dr. Yerkes came in to talk us through the procedure again.  She is such a great
person and makes us feel so comfortable.  She promised to take great care of him
and I had no doubt in my mind that she would do just that.
About an hour and a half after they took him to surgery, she came into the waiting room and
told us everything went really well.  She was surprised by how big the hernia was, but other
than that everything was very routine.  She gave us the run down of what to watch for and
how to take care of Joe over the next few days.  I was actually really impressed with how
the incision was closed. They use dissolving stitches below the skin to close the hernia, but
then they use these small white strips of tape called Steri-strips to close the incision.  On top
of that is what looks like a big square of clear tape.  This dressing is stuck to him and falls
off on its own after 2 weeks.  He can bathe with it on and everything.  Pretty amazing.
After about another 30 minutes of allowing Joe to come out of anesthesia, we got to go back
and see him.  I remember Owen being really upset and out of sorts when we went back to
see him after his surgery so I was a little nervous walking back to see Joe.  As we approached the recovery room I heard him crying.  I walked up and handed him his lovey
while the two nurses finished what they were doing with him.  Then once they were done they handed him over to me.  As soon as he was in my arms he was silent.  He calmed
down immediately.  He actually did great coming out of anesthesia!  I think he even impressed the nurses with how well he did.  He was calm, drank a bunch of juice
right away and just relaxed in my arms.

We spent about 10 minutes in PACU and then moved to our recovery room.  He was doing
so well that we didn't end up staying long at all.  Only long enough for Ryan to watch
Aladdin find the magic lamp in the Cave of Wonders.  ;)  We got Joe dressed, picked up
our prescriptions for pain meds, and were on our way.  We picked Owen up
from Grandpa's and headed back home.

I am thankful for so many things today.  I am thankful the surgery went so well.  I am
thankful Joe was such a great little patient and seemed to be in good spirits just hours after
surgery.  I am thankful we have such a great support system keeping us in their thoughts
and prayers today.  I am thankful for a supportive husband to help me through these tougher
moments in life.  I am thankful I won't have to see a hernia every time I change Joe's diaper because it always weighed on my mind that at any moment it could get stuck down and force us to go to the ER again.  I am thankful that we can finally move past this and not have to worry so much.  And I am thankful that Grandpa Joe was able to take Owen for the day because not only did it help us out but Owen was really looking forward to it.
Seems to me like Grandpa Joe had a pretty good time too.

And Owen left with a very special momento from the day...
Grandpa gave him his very first police badge.  Thanks Grandpa!!
What an awesome keepsake!!

Baby Snuggles

There are lots of little moments in life that I would always like to remember.  My memory
isn't the greatest at times, so I do my best to take pictures and videos whenever I can to capture these moments.  But when I was putting Joe to bed tonight I was reminded of
one of my all time favorite things that a picture can't do justice...baby snuggles.

The smell of jammies freshly laundered in Dreft (yes, I love Dreft and still use it for all my
kids clothes).  The smell of a clean baby just out of his nightly bath.  The warmth of his head
against the side of my cheek.  The feeling of his tiny arms draped over my shoulders and his
little legs wrapped around my waist.  The sound of his breath mixed with the familiar sound of him sucking his thumb.  I can get lost in that moment and stand there forever.
I've witnessed how fast kids grow up, so tonight I am very thankful for my baby snuggles.
And of course a baby whose favorite thing is cuddling with his mama.

Happy Valentine's Day

The Mission...capture a cute Valentine's Day photo.

In true Kalita boy fashion, neither wanted to smile at the same time...

I raided my bouquet from Ryan for props. Giving each boy a tulip I thought for sure I would
get the winner picture with a cute smile or pose...

Cute...yes, but what started as curiosity quickly turned to destruction as the tulips
were picked apart...

And then used as weapons.

I would expect nothing less.  ;)

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Happy Birthday Ryan!!

Happy birthday to the best husband a girl could ask for.
Ryan you are an amazing man and and an even more amazing father.
The boys and I are so lucky to have you and hope you had a great birthday
....You deserve it!

Happy 3rd Birthday Owen!!

Yes, I realize I'm totally late on this post as Owen's birthday was over a week ago, but I was
waiting to write it until after we went to his check up and got his growth stats.  Unfortunately
that got pushed back after all that was going on with Joe, so here we are.  But to be honest,
this fits along perfectly with Owen's birthday this year.  We've basically been celebrating
since his party two weeks ago.  A few birthday play dates here and there, special birthday
lunch with Daddy, birthday dinner at Junction Diner complete with a lit cupcake delivered via
train, a birthday ice cream date with Grandpa Joe and we're still not finished.  This coming
weekend we're off to WI to celebrate even more!  So since his birthday isn't technically over
yet, I figure I'm still within the allotted time frame for his birthday post.  Hopefully he doesn't
get used to birthdays that last three weeks though or Ryan and I are in trouble.

Back to the task at hand...Happy 3rd Birthday Owen!!!!

You are smart, active, energetic, and one of the sweetest little boys I know.  One of my
favorite memories when I picture you right now is your nightly ritual when we put Joe to
bed.  You and Joe take a bath, get changed into your jammies and then before you go
downstairs you come into Joe's room.  As I'm holding Joe I squat down so you can give him
a kiss.  You sweetly kiss Joe on the forehead, kiss me on the forehead, then pull us both in
for a big goodnight hug.  It melts my heart every time you do it.  Mostly because it was
a ritual that you created on your own and you're so sweet and caring when you do it.

But with all of your sweetness comes the typical three year old qualities.  Listening is not
always your favorite thing to do  I honestly go crazy trying to reason with you at times.
You're also very impulsive.  When things make you angry you're not quite sure how to let
your feelings out, so you quickly lash out by throwing something, hitting whomever is nearby
or screaming as loud as you can.  Not my favorite qualities of yours, but the good far outweighs the bad.  My goal as you grow is to teach you to express your feelings with
words.  I have a feeling "use your words" is going to be spoken quite frequently
in our house over the next year.

Other words you've become used to hearing are "use your walking feet Owen."  You love to
run wherever you go because walking just doesn't seem to get you there fast enough.  You
are so full of life and love to be doing something at all times.  Soccer is one of your favorite
things to do, but hockey is becoming a close second.  Mostly because these are the two
things we can play in our basement while we're stuck inside over the winter. But when we
need to slow down a little bit, race cars are your toy of choice.  Actually anything with
wheels will do...cars, trucks, tractors, etc.  You also love building "rocket trains" out of
Duplos.  Your creations are quite impressive!

You are super friendly, love playing with friends, and adapt really well in social situations.  It
doesn't matter where we are, if there are other kids there, you typically find a new friend and
keep yourself busy.  It's really fun for me to watch how easily you make new friends.  It's
clear you like having people to play with.  If it's just you and I at home you will sternly tell
me, "mommy, phone down" or "mommy, coffee down" when you'd rather I play with you than
be a spectator.  You are very outgoing and truly care about the people who are around you.
Not to say you don't have your weak moments where you get angry at your friends,
but ultimately you want everyone to be happy.   When another person is
crying or sad it really upsets you.

You're talking up a storm these days.  You are very polite saying "please," "thank you," and
"I'm sorry" when necessary.  You use up to 6 words sentences.  It's so fun being able to talk
to you more and have real conversations.  And you are SO smart.  It's hard for Daddy and I
to fool you anymore.  The other night before bed you had already eaten two apples, but
then asked Daddy for a banana.  Thinking you probably didn't need anything else to eat he
told you that we didn't have any more bananas, but maybe we could get some more
tomorrow.  You sternly looked at him and said "Daddy, come with me.  Follow me Daddy.
Right now.  You follow me right now Daddy."  You ran ahead into the kitchen and stood right
in front of the fruit bowl.  When Daddy walked in you pointed towards the lone banana sitting
there and said, "One nana, right there.  Right there. One nana.  I want it."  I'm not sure
if Daddy was at a lost for words, or it was just so cute the way you did it,
but regardless you finished your evening with one tasty banana.

And speaking of your eating habits, you love fruit these days...especially apples!  You eat
a minimum of 2-3 apples per day.  One in the morning, one for a snack, and always one
before bed.  You've also taking a huge liking to bananas.  I'm so happy you love fruit so
much, but the problem is you don't like to eat much else.  For breakfast you have a
smoothie, an apple and maybe some pancakes or waffles.  Lunch is typically grilled cheese,
quesadillas, mac n cheese or hot dogs.  And dinner, while I try to get you to eat what Daddy
and I eat, normally ends up being chicken nuggets, fish nuggets, pasta, or pizza.  We have
to plead with you nearly every night to eat some of the protein on your plate.  Vegetables
aren't your favorite either, but you'll eat carrots and cucumbers every now and then.  You're
ideal dinner would be fruit, noodles and warm strawberry milk.  Not the most nutritious
meal, but you're healthy and you're growing and that's what's important to me.

You're growing up so fast, I can hardly believe it.  Big boy undies, big boy bed, and starting
preschool in the Fall.  Where has the time gone?  Daddy and I love you so much and we
can't wait to see all the great things you'll accomplish this year.
